After the discovery of a piece of cross, believed to have been brought to the area of Omodos in the early propagation of Christianity in Cyprus, a small chapel was built. This resulted in the gathering of several monks and over the years it evolved into the incredible monastery it is today. It is believed to have been built around 327 AD, due to records of St. Helen leaving artifacts at the monastery at that date. While Omodos was not a village at that time, it is said that area grew around the findings of this monastery, and it has become the traditional village we know today.
