Undoubtably one of the most famous and wealthiest of Monasteries on record, Kykkos lies in the Marathasa Valley. It was founded Byzantine emperor Alexios Komnenos approximately end of 11th Century. According to legend, Monk Isaiah miraculously healed the daughter of Emperor and in return for his deed, requested the Icon of Virgin Mary. The Icon remains half covered today, it is said that whoever looks directly upon the icon will go blind. Located at Kykkos is also the resting place and tomb of President and Archbishop of Cyprus, Makarios.
